Today was a Mountain Athlete workout day, I train on M/W/F in the morning. This workout is one intense power hour directed by Connie Sciolino here in Boulder (she brought it here from Jackson, WY where it started in a gym there) and I am in my third week. Today myself and 4 others did the following workout outside since it is so nice out:
Warmup (5 rounds) - 20 air squats, 10 jump squats, 10 kettle ball swings, 150 jump-ropes (for me, everybody else did a dot drill but I did that on Monday so I didn’t have to)
Round 1 (5 rounds) - Kettle ball lunge walk to lightpost, turn around and walk back with kettle balls extended above head, 7 burpees, 5 kettle ball side dips.
Round 2 (5 rounds) - Pick a sandbag up throw it on top of the dumpster 5x each side, clean and squat sandbag 6 times, jump into and out of a large truck tire.
Round 3 (5 rounds) - Drag a tire weighted with sandbags that is 100 feet away with a rope all the way to your feet, do 2 other tough things that I can’t remember for some reason, ha.
Bonus (10 Rounds) - Jingle Jangle, 15 foot shuttle run 30 seconds on, 30 seconds rest.
I am finally starting to have a little fun during this workout in my third week. In the first 2 weeks I had problems recovering between workouts. I have had to adjust my other workouts to accommodate for such a high intensity full body workout at the heart of my workouts. My current plan is to make sure I have one full day off or a very light day the day before the workout and do all my intense work the day of the Mtn. Athelete workouts, M/W/F. This means I am biking and running in the afternoons on M/W/F and doing very little or nothing on T/TH.
Mountain Athlete training is great for building the ability to generate high intensity power and endurance over the course of an hour suitable for mountain sports like skiing, mountain biking, climbing and trail-running which require lots of endurance and power as well as functional strength. My main goal is strengthen the weak parts of my body with this workout by exchanging about 5-10 pounds of fat for muscle and building a much stronger core. I will then be able to endure higher intensity running and biking workouts later in the year while maintaining better form.
If you live in Boulder and this sounds fun, contact me and I will get you in touch with Connie. Chances are this does not sound fun to you, it sounds horrifying. Ha, it’s really not; you just have to love to work really hard for an hour which is a really efficient way to work out.
