Populist rage is such a pompous and misleading phrase for what’s going on right now. We’re not just a bunch of pitchfork-wielding half-wits with some vague notion of giving rich folks their comeuppance. The rage, in fact, has very specific origins. It comes from not only the revelations of corruption, but the flaunting of any responsibility for it by Wall Street. It comes from the willingness of government to not only turn a blind eye to the greed that led us into the recession, but to bail out the worst perpetrators with OUR money, and without our consent. Sure, Congress approved it, but that’s part of the problem. We don’t feel that they represent our wishes anymore. Americans feel powerless. Our anger is making life a little uncomfortable and uncertain for our so-called leaders in Washington? Forgive me if I crack a smile.
