The whole point of insurance is to aggregate risk so that its costs can be spread. Health insurance companies do that—-but very inefficiently, because they have been permitted to cherry pick the risks, leaving government and hapless emergency rooms to pay for the uninsured. They also do it inefficiently because they permit the healthiest people to stay outside the pool. The are also unfair, because they exclude huge health care burdens and shift them back to the insured——-which defeats the whole purpose of insurance. The are also insanely uneconomic because their overhead runs to 30% of health care dollars, which compares to less than 5 % for publicly run systems. And to top it all off, they ration health care, denying coverage—-hence care—- to anyone the health care bureaucrats decree fall into to their many self-serving loopholes. In every respect public systems are more fair, more effective and less expensive than private health insurance.
The Republicans and plenty of blue dog Democrats appear to be owned lock, stock and barrel by the insurance companies. So why in the world should the rest of us listen to their worn-out self serving arguments. President Obama, take the bull by the horns and lead: abolish private health insurance and give us a single payer system like Canada’s. Go to www.singlepayerUSA.net for more information
